Overview
What the course covers
The PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation (Version 7) course introduces the PRINCE2® project management method: its principles, the role of the people involved in a project, its practices and processes, and how the method is tailored to the context of a given project. Participants learn the shared vocabulary of the method, so they can work confidently on a project run using PRINCE2®.
The course follows the whole life cycle of a project, from starting it up and initiating it, through controlling its stages, to closing it. Particular attention is given to the business case and planning, to managing quality, risks and issues, and to monitoring progress.
The two-day (14 contact hours) programme is a PeopleCert-accredited training course that also prepares participants for the official PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation (Version 7) exam.
Course goals
The success of a project often depends on whether everyone involved understands roles, responsibilities and decision points in the same way. PRINCE2® provides a common vocabulary and a clear framework for this, which can be applied in different organisations and industries when tailored to the size and nature of the project.
What skills and perspectives does it provide?
Through the course, participants will be able to:
- understand the PRINCE2® principles and the structure of the method
- find their way around project roles: who is responsible for what and who decides what
- follow the life cycle of a project from starting up to closing, and recognise the key decision points
- interpret a project’s business case, plans, quality expectations and risks
- understand how progress is monitored and at what point a deviation should be referred to a higher level of management
- work with others on the project using the shared professional language of the method

Course content
Syllabus
Introduction
Outlines the aims and structure of the course and how the two days are organised.
1. Overview of PRINCE2® Project Management
Explains what a project is in PRINCE2® terms and how the elements of the method fit together: the principles, people, practices, processes and the project context.
2. People
Looks at how leadership, teamwork and communication affect the success of a project, and why the human side of change needs deliberate attention.
3. Organization
Presents the roles and levels of responsibility in a project, from the project board through the project manager to team managers, and how stakeholders are involved.
4. Starting up a project and initiating a project
Follows how the decision is made on whether a project is worth starting, and how the plans and ground rules for managing the project are put in place.
5. Business case
Shows how a project is justified by weighing the expected benefits against costs and risks, and why that justification needs to be reviewed throughout the life cycle of the project.
6. Plans
Covers the levels and steps of planning: how a plan is built from the products to be delivered, and how project, stage and team plans fit together.
7. Quality
Explains how quality expectations and acceptance criteria are defined, and how to check whether the finished products meet them.
8. Risk
Deals with identifying, assessing and managing risks, covering both threats and opportunities.
9. Controlling a stage and managing product delivery
Shows how the project manager runs the day-to-day work of a stage, and how teams accept, complete and hand over the work packages assigned to them.
10. Managing a stage boundary
Explains what happens at the end of a stage: how performance so far is assessed and how the decision on the next stage is prepared.
11. Issues
Covers how problems, requests for change and deviations that arise during the project are handled, and how decisions on them are made at the right level.
12. Progress
Shows how progress is monitored and reported, how the method works with tolerances, and when a deviation has to be escalated to a higher level of management.
13. Closing a project
Walks through the orderly closure of a project: handing over the results, evaluating performance and recording lessons learned.
14. Directing a project
Presents the role of the project board: what decisions it makes, when it needs to be involved and how it applies management by exception, stepping in only when a deviation goes beyond the agreed limits.
15. Course review
Summarises the two days and leaves room to clear up any open questions.
