Overview
What the course covers
The ITIL® AI Governance (Version 5) course offers practical help with keeping the use of artificial intelligence (AI) responsible and effective, even when AI is used widely across the organisation. It looks at who oversees AI, who answers for its results and how these responsibilities are divided among the organisation’s different functions.
The course builds on the ITIL® toolkit. Participants see how new AI opportunities can be weighed against ethical and regulatory considerations while the organisation stays quick to act and able to adapt. Another important theme is a human-centred approach, in which people have real control over what AI produces.
The one-day programme is a PeopleCert-accredited training course that also prepares participants for the official ITIL® AI Governance (Version 5) exam.
Course goals
As AI becomes part of a growing number of processes and decisions, organisations need to know who is accountable for it, what risks it carries and how they can demonstrate compliance. To support this, the course gives the teams involved a common vocabulary and a practical method, so that a wider, responsible use of AI delivers results the organisation can measure and sustain.
What skills and perspectives does it provide?
Through the course, participants will be able to:
- understand what governance means and what it can cover when applied to AI
- recognise situations where AI governance fails and match suitable controls to the risks
- use the ITIL® toolkit to assess and improve their organisation’s AI governance, following the steps of the ITIL® AI Governance Improvement Model
- identify the opportunities AI offers in their own role, industry and organisational function
- connect AI governance with other frameworks, standards and regulatory requirements
- work with colleagues in leadership, IT, risk and compliance using a shared professional language

Course content
Syllabus
0. Introduction
Outlines the aims and structure of the course and how the day is organised.
1. The AI world and the need for AI governance
Looks at how AI is changing the way organisations work and why deliberate governance is needed as AI becomes involved in more and more processes and decisions.
2. What is governance?
Clarifies what governance means in an organisation: who sets direction, who makes decisions and how accountability is ensured.
3. What is AI and what can be governed?
Builds a shared understanding of what AI is and examines which elements of AI solutions can be brought under governance.
4. When AI governance fails: capabilities, risks, and controls
Shows what happens when AI governance is incomplete or weak, and how AI capabilities, the risks they create and the controls that address those risks fit together.
5. ITIL® as a governance toolkit
Explains how existing elements of the ITIL® framework can be used as tools for governing AI.
6. ITIL® AI Governance Improvement Model: assess and stress-test, define and design
Covers the assessment and design steps of the ITIL® AI Governance Improvement Model. Participants learn how to assess and stress-test their organisation’s current AI governance, then define and design the governance arrangements it needs.
7. ITIL® AI Governance Improvement Model: implement and maintain
Covers the next two steps of the model, implementation and maintenance: putting the governance arrangements designed earlier into practice in the organisation and sustaining them so that they keep working as the use of AI changes.
8. AI in your world: unlock AI in your role, industry, and organizational function
Taking their own role, industry and organisational function as the starting point, participants examine where AI can create value and which governance considerations need to be taken into account.
9. Connecting AI governance with frameworks, regulations, and standards
Shows how AI governance fits with other frameworks, regulatory requirements and standards. The standards discussed include ISO/IEC 42001 and IEEE 7014.
